Triathletes in the medals at National 25-mile Time Trial Championships

In the domestic scene of cycle time trialling, this past weekend was the National 25-mile Championship weekend for both women and men. Both events had significant triathlete connections which, as regulars readers will know, we like to keep an eye on. Here's our roundup...

Women's Championship

The women raced on Saturday on a challenging E15/25 course based in Newport, Essex. The event was won by Hayley Simmonds (Team Velosport), who recently won the blue ribbon British Time Trial Championship and also won the 100-mile Championship title.

Pos Women
1st Hayley Simmonds (Team Velosport) 59:49
2nd Kate McNeill (www.drag2zero.com) 1:02:28
3rd Mel Wasley (Epsom CC) 1:03:01

Second place was taken by triathlete turned TT rider Kate McNeill who we recently interviewed, the multiple European Age Group triathlon medallist really making a mark in her new discipline and taking a National Championship medal having recently been signed up by the Drag2Zero team.

Perhaps an even more remarkable story is third place Mel Wasley. Like Kate, Mel has been racing in triathlons - including finishing fourth at the 2014 Norseman (watch her video!) - and is a member of Black Line London. Amazingly, this was her first time racing a TT bike...

Both riders perhaps owe just a small debt to Rebecca Slack, another triathlete with a great TT pedigree, including National 100-mile Championship wins in 2011 and 2012. Rebecca is the founder and organiser of the South East Women's Time Triathlon Series (SEWTTS - www.sewtts.co.uk), now in its second year. Both Kate and Mel have taken part in some of those events this year, and the last report from the series from Rebecca was right on the money...

SEWTSS

Kate's team mate and fellow triathlete Vicky Gill took ninth place on Saturday with a time of 1:04:56.

Men's Championship

The men's Championship race was held on Sunday on the H25/21 course near Marlow. The win went to Ryan Perry (Langdale Lightweights RT) in a time of 48:04. Ryan raced last week in the winning relay team at the Outlaw Triathlon in Nottingham where he joined Will Clarke and Shaun Livesey. His bike split there was 4:20:44 which clearly didn't take too much out of him, as he was able to beat defending champion Matt Bottrill by 20 seconds.

Pos Men
1st Ryan Perry (Langdale Lightweights RT) 48:04
2nd Matt Bottrill (www.drag2zero.com) 48:24
3rd Kieron Davies (www.drag2zero.com) 48:36

While Kate McNeill makes the triathlon to time trial transition, Matt Bottrill is planning to go in the other direction as we discussed with him recently so expect to see some very fast bike splits appearing in some middle distance domestic races in 2016.
