I said in the weekend preview that the inaugural Challenge Heilnronn should be a cracker, such was the biking power on the start list in the men's race. While it may have been, primarily, a 'domestic' race for the Germans, when you have the likes of Kienle, Dreitz, Raelert, Böcherer and Frommhold - and then add in 2014 ETU Middle Champion and Cannes Triathlon winner Giulio Molinari (ITA) among others, you have a world class field irrespective of nationalities racing.

While, perhaps, Andreas Dreitz and Ironman World Champion Sebastian Kienle may have been expected to have been the fastest athletes on two wheels, the day really belonged to Andi Böcherer who produced a complete triathlon performance to win in fine style.

Out of the water alongside Michael Raelert, his 2:14:38 bike split was three minutes clear of anyone else, and then a 1:14:44 run split gave up only 15 seconds to second place, two-time Ironman 70.3 World Champion Raelert. Dreitz and Kienle took third and fourth respectively - reminding everyone that they are more than just 'cyclists', as Kienle had the fastest run split (1:13:01), while Dreitz wasn't much slower with a 1:13:50.

Böcherer and Kienle will go head-head - joined by the likes of Jan Frodeno and Andreas Raelert - in two weeks time at the Ironman European Championships, Frankfurt.

On the women's side, for much of the day it appeared as though the win was going to Anja Beranek. After a strong swim and her typical storming bike ride, Beranek held a lead of more than five minutes at T2 from Laura Philipp. Once on to the run, that gap started to fall however as Philipp closed in on the pace-setting Beranek. Philipp ran a swift 1:20:16, which was more than enough to overcome the 1:28:51 of Beranek to take victory in Heilbronn.
