The Snowdonia Slateman from Always Aim High Events has become one of the premier events of the early part of the UK triathlon season, and with over 2,200 competign across the weekend in Llanberis, its popularity is higher than ever. The 2015 edition also saw the introduction of the 'Slateman Savage', challenging athletes to race on both Saturday and Sunday, combinng the sprint and full distance events.

The main event saw tough racing at the front but the top steps on the podium were once again occupied by Ewan Brown and Suzie Richards.

Sport is the winner as the sun shines on the Slateman: Thousands conquer the iconic Snowdonia Triathlon.

After the success of the first day and the sprint event, day two at Slateman Triathlon powered by Suunto was met with excitement and anticipation by the 1500 triathletes who descended on Llanberis, North Wales to take part in what has become one of the UK's most iconic triathlons.

Saturday's clear blue skies were replaced with slightly overcast conditions, however what was still evident were the vibrant mountain landscapes, challenging quarry trails and a glistening, freshwater lake for the opening salvo swim in Llyn Padarn.

Saturday had seen over 500 triathletes embark on the Slateman Triathlon Sprint event. The first day also included the Slateman Junior race where over 170 youths participated.

After 500m of swimming, 51km on the bike and closing with an epic 11km trail run, it was Ewan Brown, who for the second year running emerged victorious in Sunday's men's race with an incredible time of 2:16:22. Brown beat Lewis Eccleston who finished in second place and Alex Foster, who finished third.

The result in the women's race meant that the Triathlon had a case of Deja-vu as Suzie Richards also regained her Slateman Triathlon Champion title. It wasn't all plain sailing for Richards as Natalie Seymour pushed her all the way to finish line, but Richards' unbelievable time of 2:36:54 proved to be enough to keep Seymour at bay who finished just 47 seconds behind. Slateman Savage sprint winner Ruth Purbrook finished in third to complete the women's podium.

With thousands of enthusiastic supporters cheering on the triathletes the atmosphere at the Padarn lakeside was electric. Emerging out of the water, defending Slateman and Always Aim Tri-Series champion Ewan Brown eased into the top 5 as the leaders exited T1. However, as they returned into Llanberis following the challenging 51km bike leg it was clear that it would be difficult for anyone to challenge Brown, as he started the run in first place, a clear 1:23 in front of challenger Lewis Eccleston.

Brown then extended his lead over his closest competitor Eccleston with a great trail run time. Brown eventually ran out Slateman winner with over two minutes to spare.

Suzie Richards wins Slateman 2015In the women's race the 2014 Slateman and Always Aim Tri-Series Champion Suzie Richards was gunning to defend her champion status for the second year running. As the race unfolded Natalie Seymour was emerging as a genuine challenger for Richards title. In the end Richards showed everyone her true champion qualities by digging in deep to beat her rival Seymour by 47 seconds.

Mark Palmer was the quickest athlete completing the legendary Kinetica Quarryman challenge with a sensational time of 09:14. Palmer was rewarded for his amazing effort with loads of Kinetica goodies!

The thousands of athletes, supporters and local community members were treated to a vast amount of live entertainment and local cuisines over the Slateman weekend. From climbing walls to bouncy castles there was loads of things to do to keep the children entertained. The weekend also saw promising local bands and solo artists play live music to an excited crowd who basked in the famous Slateman atmosphere.

On Saturday Andrew Nash and Ruth Purbrook emerged as individual winners of the men and women Slateman Tri Sprint, after storming around the course in a time of 1:10:29 and 1:21:06 respectively.

The sprint in Llanberis consisted a 400m Padarn lake swim, 20km bike leg - which took in the beast-climb that is the Llanberis Pass - and scenic, but demanding, 6km trail run in the quarries above the race village, Nash went on to dominate the field, winning with over three minutes to spare.

The 24-year-old representing Manx Tri-Club was jubilant at the finish line and was full of praise of the event and the event organisers. Second place went to Kieren John, with Dan Gennazzini claiming third.

There was a shock in the women's race as the Manchester Triathletes, who had dominated last years sprint were beaten into first place by Ruth Purbrook. Purbrook produced a scintillating performance to finish in first place ahead of last year's winner Pauline May and Kate Morris who finished second and third place respectively.

The race was decided when Purbrook displayed her sheer power and quality in the bike leg were she produced a scintillating time of 42:08 which was over two minutes quicker than any other female competitor.

The fifth instalment of the famous Slateman Triathlon saw the introduction of the Slateman Savage. The Savage saw competitors compete over two days in the Sprint and the Full distance races. The winner of the Slateman Savage in the male category was Dan Gennazzini producing a extraordinary time of 03:50:28. The winner of the Savage in the women's category was Ruth Purbrook completed the eye-watering challenge in 04:02:58.

Event planner and Always Aim High Events Director, Tim Lloyd was delighted with the success of the fifth Slateman Triathlon, commenting:

“Wow, what a weekend! The Slateman was the first ever event Always Aim High Events organised. In the first year we had around 400 athletes participating, so to see over 2,200 athletes come to Llanberis over the weekend is something to be really proud of. It's incredible to see how much the event, and the company, has grown in such a short amount of time, and we won't stop there. The event and company is aiming to get bigger and better!

“The race action across the weekend was superb. All the winners were worthy of their titles. I want to reserve special congratulations to Ewan and Suzie who retained their Slateman Triathlon title; it really is a great achievement. They've set themselves up nicely for the Sandman and Snowman to really kick on and challenge for the Always Aim Tri-series, which will see the champion fly to the beautiful Carribean Island of Nevis and compete in the Nevis Triathlon.

It was fantastic to see so many juniors participating in the Slateman junior races. We are delighted to be able to offer juniors an opportunity to be able to race in front of a big crowd; hopefully it will act as a platform for future triathletes! I want to say thank you to the Gwynedd Sports Development team for their support.”

“We are very grateful to Suunto for their support as well as our other partners Chain Reaction Cycles, Nevis Triathlon, Kinetica, AquaSphere, The Pentreth Group, Salomon, Amphibia, Superfeet, Full of Beans, Kon-x and Bwtri”

“I would also like to say a huge congratulations and thank you from everyone at AAHE to everyone who took part in the sprint and full tri events. Having talked to entrants of the weekend it looks like we have welcomed over a hundred first time triathletes to the Slateman, we are so pleased to be in a position to do that. The sprint race is a great opportunity for anyone who is looking to get into Triathlon.”

The Slateman is the first triathlon in the Always Aim High Tri-Series, which also includes the excellent Sandman and Snowman tri's, both in September.
