Jonny Nicol from Racetime Events (www.racetimeevents.co.uk) reports from a sunny 2015 edition of the Leicester Triathlon.

Leicester Triathlon – 4th May 2015

Wonderful sunshine greeted the the 2015 Leicester Triathlon and with some speedy athletes, including last years male and female winners Duncan and Claire Shea-Simonds, we were in for some quick racing.

There was the usual mix of every level of athlete we often see at our events. 25% of the field were taking part in their first ever triathlon right through to the other end of the spectrum with British Junior Elite Champion James Teagle, British Elite Iestyn Harrett, and Ironman World Championship qualifiers Duncan and Claire Shea-Simonds and a host of GB Age Group athletes all hoping for good results. It was also great to welcome Stefan Hoggan racing his first ever triathlon and showing that the British Paratri squad have another great athlete to represent them.

For the ladies it was Claire Shea-Simonds that dominated the race and took a commanding win by over four mins from Anita Howe in second and Lucy Hartwright in third.

In the men's event there were some great performances, a special mention goes out to Marc Davies, Steve Gibson and Alex Bruce who all took huge amounts of time off from the same event last year showing what hard work and commitment can achieve.

From the start list it looked like the race would be hotly contested by the three Racetime Events Tri Club athletes and they did not disappoint. Iestyn Harrett led out of the water followed 49 seconds later by Teagle and Shea-Simonds hot on his heels. Shea-Simonds is known for being a super biker and posted the quickest bike split of the day. Catching and passing Harrett at around the half way point on the bike, he couldn’t shake the youngster Teagle though and came into T2 with only a small lead. It would not be enough as Teagle posted the quickest run split to take the overall win ahead of Harrett who managed to catch Shea-Simonds and beat him into third by one second with a sprint finish.

There has been lots of wonderful feedback already and we would like to thank our great sponsors and marshals for helping the day run so smoothly again.

We now look forward to a couple of brand new events in the Racetime Events calendar, firstly the Bradgate Park Run on 21st June with options of 5, 10 or 15km races in the most stunning country park in Leicestershire and then the Reservoir Cogs Sportive on 5th July with a 50 mile and 112 mile option that takes in some of Leicestershires finest roads and a few nice climbs.
