Top performances and fast times at the inaugural Bedford Autodrome Duathlon

The Bedford Autodrome Duathlon took place on Sunday 29th March, sparking interest from all over the UK. Held at the famous Palmer Motor Sport racing circuit in Bedfordshire, resulted in an impressive back drop for fast racing featuring both a Sprint and a Standard distance race. Despite this being the first time the event has been run, an impressive number of entries were taken; all of whom who had to battle the weather conditions, making it a tough race for all competitors.  

Based at one of the country's purpose built motor racing circuits the event offers many unique features including the mass start on the starting grid, transition in the pits and a traffic-free race track. The separate run and bike courses allow the competitors to utilise the whole race track to get those racing lines and with the super smooth tarmac guarantees a fast and exciting experience for all competitors, along with excellent spectating opportunities.

Sprint (5km run / 20km bike / 5km run)

The Sprint race saw some fast times, with four athletes dominating the field and battling it out for first place. Andrew Rendall of Team Newcastle Triathlon beat David Mole of Stourbridge Velo Club into second place by 1min 10 seconds, claiming the win in a time of 01:08:04. Lee Ship from Diss Cycling Club secured third place in a time of 01:09:49.

In the women's race, Jenny Gunning, Rachael Smith and Whitney Larkin raced each other for the women's title, with Gunning securing the win by crossing the finish line in 01:23:48, just over a minute ahead of Smith in 01:24:55. Larkin claimed third place in 01:25:40.

Bedford Autodrome Duathlon

Standard (10km / 40km bike / 5km run)

In the standard race Peter Fenwick of Shetland Triathlon Club put in an outstanding performance on the track. Fenwick took the lead from the start and kept extending the gap throughout the race, claiming the title in a time of 01:59:19. Nic Pillinger of St.Neots CC took second place in 02:00:18 ahead of Carl James in 02:01:55.

In the women's race, Melissa Burrell of Bedford Harriers Performance dominated the women's field and secured the win after crossing the finish line in 02:22:49. Bernice Curtis of BRJ Club took second place in 02:47:41, with Sandra Mogan of Hemel Hemstead CC coming third in 02:56:18.

The next Bedford Autodrome Duathlon takes place on 22nd November 2015, giving competitors who enter both the Spring and the Autumn duathlons a great opportunity to measure their improvement over the season..
