Buckingham to Rockingham to take on Wylie...

This coming Sunday, the British Elite Duathlon Championships returns to Rockingham Circuit, Corby, after what was an excellent day of racing at a perfect venue last year. With superb facilities, smooth, fast (traffic-free) closed roads and the athletes in sight of spectators for almost the entire race, it really is a gem of venue for multisport. Now, if someone could just put a lake in the middle somewhere...

As well as championship status, the event is also the first in the UK this year which appears on our Prize money in British triathlon feature, with £5000 in total on offer, split as follows:

1st £1000, 2nd £750, 3rd £400, 4th £250, 5th £100 (equal for Men and Women).

The 2014 winners were Phil Wylie and Emma Pallant, and both are on the start-list once again.

Pallant will certainly start as favourite to defend her title, and she has been dominant on the domestic seen recently, also winning at Blenheim, Windsor, London and the Jenson Button Trust Triathlon last season. Sophie Coldwell, India Lee, Gillian Palmer and Vicky Gill will also have their sights set on a potential podium - but with no water to negotiate, Pallant would appear to be the class of the field.

Emma Pallant

The men's race should prove interesting. Phil Wylie had his best season ever last year. After winning the British title, a Bronze at the European Championships was followed with fourth place at the World's for the duathlon specialist who just keeps on getting better. He's also been in good running form already this season, 11th at the National XC Champs.

Elite men

Absent last year, but scheduled to return this time around is Mark Buckingham. Mark won this title for three consecutive seasons (2011-2013), and also arrives off the back of a strong result, having finished second last weekend in the Quarteira European Cup event. Another strong runner is Adam Bowden, who took second to Mark in 2013, plus last years Silver medallist Aaron Harris, David Bishop, Carl Avery, Iestyn Harrett and several more who will be looking to make an impression. Last year a select group formed after a fast first run, and were never going to be touched by the chasers on the bike, leaving it to be an exciting final 2.5km run with just seconds separately eight athletes. I'm expecting something similar this year - and would certainly be very surprised if anyone manages to reach T2 alone with a significant gap.

Look out for Ben Dijkstra and Alex Yee to renew their rivalry in the Junior Men's race.

The Seniors, Juniors and Paraduathletes will race over 4.9km / 20km / 2.45km, with the Youth's 2.45km / 10km / 1.25km. Racing starts at 9 a.m. (Youth Girls), with the final event starting at 2:45 p.m. (Senior Men) - well worth coming along to watch if you are in and around the Corby area. Full schedule HERE.
