Magnus Backstedt unveiled as Pedalcover ambassador ahead of Ironman World Championships

Magnus Backstedt, a former pro cyclist turned Ironman competitor, has been announced as the latest ambassador for a new insurance product designed specifically for triathletes and cycling enthusiasts.

The 2004 Paris-Roubaix champion, who is in the final stages of training for triathlon’s most iconic event, The Ironman World Championship in Hawaii this weekend, joins the Pedalcover (www.pedalcover.co.uk) team as it ramps up its UK profile.

The Swedish-born, South Wales-based Tour De France stage winner joins two-time world triathlon champion Helen Jenkins in supporting the new business.

Backed by one of the UK’s largest insurance providers, Pedalcover is a unique bike and home insurance that combines all bikes and accessories under a single policy.

Replacing the need to take out separate bike insurance, or specify multiple bikes on a home insurance policy, Pedalcover provides cover during training, leisure and competition time, at home and abroad.

Backstedt has known Pedalcover’s founder Darren Thomas for a number of years and he and his wife, Megan Hughes, a retired track and road racing cyclist, have been long standing clients.

Having himself competed in Ironman France and represented Wales in pro-am cycling events internationally, Darren has combined his passion for cycling with a career in insurance, to develop Pedalcover.

Darren, said: “I’ve known Magnus for years and Megan even longer through cycling circles. They have been longstanding clients of mine and I discussed my idea about Pedalcover with Magnus in the early days when it was just an idea. It was great to get his feedback on what current providers are lacking, helping to develop a bespoke product specifically for triathletes and cyclists. It was a natural decision to invite him to be a brand ambassador for us and we wish him all the best in Kona at the weekend.”

Qualifying for what is renowned as toughest triathlon event in the world in Kona, Hawaii through his time of 10 hours 33 minutes at Ironman Wales, Tenby in August 2013, this will be the fourth Ironman that Backstedt competes in.

He said: “I’ve known Darren for many years and I’ve always trusted him to look after all my family’s insurance needs. My whole family rides and we have several bikes in our household!

“I already had bikes covered via our home insurance policy with Darren, but when he told me Pedalcover was expanding to cover triathlon competitions, travel insurance, and healthcare, I could immediately see the massive value it presented to all age-group triathletes and I haven’t stopped talking about it since.

“It really is one of the most competitive insurance products for triathletes and leisure cyclists out there.

“I was thrilled to become a brand ambassador for Pedalcover because I feel every athlete, triathlete and cyclist should be able to enjoy our shared passion.

“The protection Pedalcover provides ensures that you can continue to compete with minimum stress and disruption. It provides total peace of mind, so we can focus on the right stuff; training hard”
