4th Annual Sandman Triathlon is a ‘superb sunny success’

"One of the best triathlons in the world." That's how this weekends' Sandman Triathlon was described by second placed finisher and GB athlete, Stephen Skates.

The Sandman Triathlon – powered by Suunto – is set in the gorgeous Newborough Forest, Anglesey. On Sunday 21st September the sun shone down on of this corner of Wales to welcome the 850 adult and 150 junior triathletes who took part in what is quickly becoming recognised as one of the UK's most beautiful triathlons.

Organised by North Wales' event specialists, Always Aim High Events, the race sold out over two months ago and its popularity continues to grow. The standard of racing was as exceptional as the weather with a number of tight battles in the different races and categories on offer.

In the Sandman Sprint (400m/18km/5km) the female winner was Natalie Lawrence who beat nearest rival Tilly Edwards by almost four minutes. In the men's race the reigning champion Huw Brassington was denied the chance to retain his title by Lewis Eccleston from Astley and Tyldesley Road Runners Club.

The full distance women's Sandman (1000m/60km/10km) was won by Suzie Richards whilst Ewan Brown took the men's title - a mirror image of the Slateman Triathlon 2014 earlier this year. The series will conclude with the challenge that is the Snowman Triathlon held on the 5th October 2014.

Ewan Brown came out of the water in 6th position but managed to get himself into a winning position with an incredible cycle ride of 1:31:06 over the 60km course. Brown held onto his lead through the run and came across the line first, despite constant pressure from second place finisher and GB athlete Stephen Skates.

In the women's race first place went to GB athlete Suzie Richards who easily beat the rest of the field to claim her second Always Aim High Events triathlon title of the year.

Both Brown and Richards are now one step closer to the Always Aim High Events Triathlon Series and grabbing themselves the ultimate tri prize. The grand prize for the AAH series is a trip to the Nevis Triathlon including economy flights, transfers, seven nights hotel stay, and a free race place for the male and female winner.

Race planner and Always Aim High Events Director, Nigel Kendrick, speaks about the success of the 4th edition of the Sandman:

"Today has been simply fantastic. The Event Village has been packed all day with supporters, local community members, families and the 1000 adult and junior competitors. As a result the atmosphere has been electric which has really added to this world-class event.

"I myself live in the area so it's so great to be bringing so many people here to show them what we have to offer, and hope that they will keep coming back for more. This in turn helps bring a positive impact on the local economy.

"The race itself was brilliant with some superb competition. The feedback from the participants, supporters and local community has been extremely positive and the people are already getting excited about the 2015 race!

"We would like to say thank you to all our volunteers, Suunto, Visit Wales, Anglesey County Council, the Newborough Community, Natural Resources Wales and event sponsors, Chain Reaction Cycles, Superfeet, Kinetica, Salomon, Aquasphere and Sports Tours International for their fantastic support during the organisation of this event."
