Veterans Dominate Big Cotswold Swim - Saturday 5th July 2014

Two Miles - RESULTS
One Mile - RESULTS

People came from far and wide to take part in the Big Cotswold Swim, organised by Tri Ferris Promotions at Waterland Outdoor Centre, Cotswold Water Park in a beautiful swimming lake that was warmer than the air temperature.

In the one mile event Bath's Alex Hill had a commanding lead over veterans Steve Banner of Oxford Masters and Giles Russell of Swindon Tri and as Hill crossed the finish line first he said “That was great I want to go back in and go around again”. With veteran men taking 2nd and 3rd the 40+ prize went to Rich Smith of Stroud Masters. He was just ahead of team mate and first female Lorraine Savagar, a regular at the event as was second placed Alice Anger a junior from Swimpodium, with Bethan Rhodes of Malmesbury tussling with Coventry's Dawn Smith to take third, whilst Dawn had to settle for the 40+ trophy. The 50+ trophies went to local Helen Manners of Cirencester Tri and Andy Garrett or Swindon Dolphins.

As the two mile swim started the “heavens opened', which wasn't a problem for the swimmer, but it mean't the spectators got just as wet!

As they came around for their first lap the top three were in close contention, but by the finish City of Hereford's Stuart Morrish has a 30 second lead over Paul Bates (Big Ricks Team) who in turn had 30 seconds over Jo Maddocks (Cheltenham Tri) - these three were all in the 45-49 age group, so veteran prize went to John Tanner of Cats Solutions. Close on the heels of the top three men was the female winner Ema Dearsley of Thames Turbo, who had over a four minute lead on Shirley Yarde (50+) of Somerset and Zsuzsanna Felvégi of City of Oxford.

The 50+ men's trophy was strongly contested with Dave Milburn (Newbury SC), Warwickshire's Mike Ireland, and Brian Armstrong of Gloucester Masters finishing 5th, 6th and 7th overall respectively. Not to be outdone by the their male team mates Liz Pudney (Newbury AC) took the 40+ prize and was followed in by Angela Wadley (Gloucester Masters) who took the 50+ trophy.

There are not many sporting events where the top women finish so close to the men or where the 40 and 50+ lead the way, but it was nice to see, for a change, at the Big Cotswold Swim and made for a great atmosphere at the finish.
