Germany's own über biker and two-time Ironman 70.3 World Champion Sebastian Kienle took a long overdue first win at the Ironman distance today, adding the title of Ironman European Champion to already impressive palmarès at Ironman Frankfurt.

As we highlighted last week in our preview piece, a very strong field were set for one of the highlights of the European summer, including a motivated World Champion Frederik Van Lierde, who stated earlier in the year that one of his goals for the race was to join the Sub-eight hour club.

2008 Olympic Champion Jan Frodeno was making his first attempt at the distance, and not surprisingly with that ITU swim speed headed out the swim, where he had Van Lierde, Bas Diederen (NED), Andreas Raelert (GER) of the favourites within a small front pack. They had exactly four minuted on the biking power of Kienle.

Once on two wheels it didn't look like it was going to be a great debut for Frodeno, who suffered two punctures and lost a lot of time. Meanwhile Kienle was doing what his does best, and buy the end of the ride (a very swift 4:12:13), he had a bike course record and a five and a half minute T2 margin over Frederik Van Lierde.

An amazing rider, as he has proven many times, one of Kienle's often overlooked skills is his ability to run very strongly off of a hard ride. A 2:49:35 left little margin for his lead to be eroded, and with Van Lierde running 2:49:15, that was the top two spots on the podium sealed - Kienle doing so in a course record of 7:55:14, his third time under eight hours in iron-distance racing - check out the updated all-time listing HERE.

Not giving up, despite punctures and cramps on the run, Frodeno still ran a 2:43:14 marathon to take third place - and effort which marks him out as a real contender at this distance.
