Michael Barnett reports on a great racing start for the newly formed Doncaster Triathlon Club (www.doncastertriathlonclub.com) at Sunday's Epworth Triathlon.

Clean sweep for Doncaster's newest Triathlon club

Sunday 4th May saw the second running of the Epworth Triathlon. This event held at the Epworth Leisure Centre and organised by Race Hard Events (www.racehard.co.uk) was the first event that Doncaster's newest triathlon club have been able to enter en masse.

Doncaster Triathlon Club were formed on 1st April 2014 and have amassed over 30 members in the last month.

On Sunday 15 members of Doncaster Triathlon Club out of the total 150 entrants lined up to compete in the event, which consisted of a 400m swim in Epworth Leisure Centre pool followed by a 20km bike ride and a 5km run both carried out in the local vicinity.

A special mention should go to local residents Georgina Howard Weston, Steven Durdy and Craig Duke who were competing in their maiden triathlons.

The race culminated in Doncaster Triathlon Club taking a clean sweep in the men's race with an extremely tight finish at the top. Head Coach Jonathan Frary finished first in a course record time of 55:25 with up-and-coming triathlete Tom Morrris finishing just 25 seconds (55:48) behind Jonathan with Michael Chadwick completing the podium finishing third in 57:04.

For a club that is in its infancy this is a huge achievement and highlights the triathlon skills pool that is available in the metropolitan borough of Doncaster.

The club also had several other podium finishes with Tom Bunkle and Georgina Howard Weston finishing second and third respectively in the under 20 categories. Katie Webster finished first in the female 20-39 category and finally Jayne Baldwin finished first in the female 40-49 category.

Head Coach Jonathan Frary commented "A great first day out racing for the club with some outstanding results, plenty of celebration for many of our members as this was their first triathlon!...and it's fair to say they're hooked.

“It's really encouraging to see the enthusiasm for the club from DCLT who have helped us immensely in finding great venues to train in. We've received funding from local company The Chefs Kitchen and on-going support and training for our athletes through the superbly skilled team at Blizard Physiotherapy.

“The most exciting factor of the club is how involved our members are in setting the direction and volunteering to run the different sections. It really is a one team approach that's open and friendly to everyone, no matter what ability"
