Clive Harvey reports from the nineteenth running of the Frosty Aquathlon at Littlehampton.

Results: The Frosty (800m / 10k)
Results: The Frostbite (400m / 5k)

With banks of shingle still piled up at the top of Littlehampton Beach from the recent storms, race morning saw dry conditions for the annual Frosty Aquathlon, now in it’s nineteenth year. There was a strong headwind blowing as the Frostbite race got underway, a 400 metre swim and 5k run.

A past winner of the event, Pavan Rooprai was first out of the pool and through transition in just 5:30. However he was chased out of the pool building by Matthew Burt from Crawley Tri Club just one second behind and the close racing continued along the run. The races see competitors start in waves so the two could see exactly where they were placed around the whole course and they were running neck and neck all the way round. Pavan, from Thames Turbo achieved a run split of 18:14 just one second ahead of Matthew to win the title two seconds ahead in a time of 23:44, although it was a superb achievement from Matthew as he won the Junior title. The fastest run split for the 5k was recorded by Nigel Gates of 18:07 to finish third overall. The first lady was Sarah Fiddamen in a time of 31:20 almost two minutes ahead of the second placed lady.

Turning to the main race of the Frosty, some fast swim splits were recorded with the quickest of the morning recorded by Tom Goddard from host club Tuff Fitty Tri - who scorched out of transition in just 11:15 for the 800m swim. There were further quick Tuff Fitty swimmers in the form of Kevin Pearson, last years winner, and Nicole Patterson-Lett but they were split by John Tindell from Brighton Phoenix. Danielle Evans from Brighton Tri Club was the first lady out of the water. Again all the leading contenders start at the same time and strategy came into play as the run specialists moved into gear hoping to chase down those ahead. However the quicker swimmers were not going to give up easily. Yesterday Joe Pascoe represented his club Tuff Fitty in a league cross country race and showed no evidence of tiredness moving up from his ninth swim position to take the lead on the run. Joe’s run split of 36:30 in the strong wind, was sufficient to bring him home overall victor. Meanwhile John Tindell was matching his good swim with a strong run to finish second overall. Tom Goddard would cross the line in third place overall.

In the ladies race Amy Harris from Horsham Amphibians was having a good race overtaking Danielle to record the fastest female run split of 40:14 and would cross the line as first lady with Danielle second and Liz McDougall to return two members of Brighton Tri Club in the top three. There was a superb performance from husband and wife team of Clive and Nicole Patterson-Lett who won the male and female vet categories representing Tuff Fitty Tri. The super vet titles were won by Malcolm Hughes and Debbie Evers, both from Brighton Phoenix and regular competitors in the race over a number of years.

It is always good to see strong support from local clubs with particularly strong contingents from Brighton Phoenix, Horsham Amphibians and Brighton Tri Club entering into the team event, where four competitors to include at least one female seek to cross the line in the quickest time. However it was the organising club Tuff Fitty Triathlon Club who secured the title to conclude another successful event in Sussex by the Sea.
