Putting the disappointment of withdrawing from Challenge Melbourne before the start three weeks ago, Liz Blatchford kicked of her season with a win in Australia today, securing top spot on the podium at the Huskisson Long Course Triathlon, aka 'The Husky', in New South Wales, Australia. In doing so she also defended her win from 2013.

Depsite concerns in the days leading up to the race with a swelling in her ankle, the intensive treatment worked alongside some extensive strapping. Blatchford spent the swim and bike in close contact with Lisa Marangon (third two weeks ago at Ironman 70.3 Geelong), before a controlled run to finish a minute and a half clear. Recently announced as a member of the Uplace-BMC Pro Triathlon Team, Blatchford will be building a season with a goal to improve on her third place at Kona last October.

Liz said of her race "Early races are always a test of your form. So it's nice to start with a win. The good news is that my ankle felt all right. It was strapped really tightly, so it didn't bother me too much. I felt it a little when I ran out of the water, but I just tried not to focus on it too much. In the bike leg, Lisa and I worked hard to put some time on the rest of the girls, but I still felt fresh going into T2. I started the run at a decent pace and then focused on doing what I had to do to control the race. Next up is the Batemans Bay Challenge in three weeks. Another half distance race, but it's my first ever Challenge race, so I'm excited.”

2012 Ironman World Champion Pete Jacobs (who we interviewed late last year while he was in London), showed superb early season form in running away from Tim Reed for the win. Fifth in Auckland and second in Geelong, Reed has performed well already in 2014 signalling that Jacobs is looking to make good on his aim of reaching fitness much earlier in the year an keeping it.
