Here is part two of our "how did they get to Kona?" feature. You can see the analysis for the GB Age Group women at Kona 2013 HERE

Outlined below are the GBR and IRL male Age Groupers racing at Kona this year, with details of how and where they qualified - along with a few more stats and points of interest too.

Once again, a big thanks here goes to Russell Cox (www.CoachCox.co.uk) who provided the vast majority of the data. If you like this sort of thing, you'll love his Ironman Statistics.

Points of interest

  • There are 76 entrants listed above
  • David Condon (IRL) is the only GBR/IRL male athlete that qualified for Kona at a 70.3 event (70.3 Hawaii)
  • There are three 'Legacy Programme' entrants on the list
  • There are four 'Lottery' entrants on the list
  • There is one 'Media/Celebrity' entry on the list (Gordon Ramsay)
  • There is one name (Matthew James, M30-34), we haven't been able to trace!
  • That leaves 66 athletes qualified via full Ironman events*
  • If you exclude the swim shortened Ironman Melbourne, the fastest GB/IRL Age Group qualifier was Martin Muldoon (IRL), with an 8:55:10 at Ironman Copenhagen.
  • Another Irishman, Niall Somers came incredibly close to also qualifying with a 'sub-nine' time, courtesy of 9:00:04 at Ironman Austria.
  • 26 of the 66 athletes who qualified via an Ironman (39%) did so at Ironman UK
  • 8 of the 66 athletes who qualified via an Ironman (12%) did so at Ironman Wales (2012)
  • Outside of UK and Wales, only 13 GBR/IRL athletes on this list qualified at the reaminder of the European Ironman events combined.
  • 13 of the 66 athletes who qualified via an Ironman (20%) did so by winning their Age Group at their qualifying race.
  • 36 of the 66 athletes who qualified via an Ironman (55%) did so by finishing in the top three of their Age Group qualifying race.
  • The highest placed athlete overall (inc Pro's) at their qualifying race was David Condon at the Hawaii 70.3 (5th)
  • The highest placed athletes overall (inc Pro's) at their (full distance) qualifying races were Sam Baxter (Switzerland) and Graeme Buscke (UK), who were both 13th overall. Both won their Age Groups, and both were the second fastest overall Age Group athletes.

(* acknowledging of course that Ironman Melbourne had the swim cut short due to sea conditions).
