The first annual Channel Challenge for the Sea Pool in Bude Cornwall took place this past weekend, supported by blueseventy. Ten teams of swimmers came together with the double objective of covering the distance of the English Channel and raising vital funds needed to repair the historic Sea Pool with every stroke.

Bude’s Sea Pool was created in the 1930s to provide a safe place for local swimmers and the thousands of people who visit it each year. It’s also a popular location for many local and visiting triathletes. The Sea Pool sits in a striking location under the cliffs of the north Cornwall coast and is topped up twice a day by the waves of the Atlantic. Since 2011 it’s been managed by the local community and the new Channel Challenge was so successful that there are plans to make it an annual event.

Local school teacher, Mel Bardsley, came up with the idea for the Channel Challenge. She said: “It went really well and we plan to make this an annual event now! It was fantastic to have Olympic open water medal winning swimming star, Cassie Patten there too!”

She added: “The sea pool is loved by the local community and visitors. It’s busy every summer and even in the coldest winter days there are regular swimmers in there. It would be devastating for us to lose the pool and events like this are brilliant to bring the community together to support the Sea Pool.”

Swimming all-year-round at locations such as the Bude Sea Pool is exactly what motivated the original founders of blueseventy over twenty years ago. blueseventy has provided swimmers with suits to enjoy the freedom of the water without feeling constrained by their environment or their suits ever since.
