Ian Lawton and Rebecca Holland winners of Macclesfield Triathlon 2013

The Macclesfield Triathlon took place yesterday (Sunday 18th August 2013), with a total of 166 athletes crossing the finish line.

Based at the Macclesfield Leisure Centre, the event started with a 400m swim in the 8 lane heated indoor pool, followed by a beautiful 24.9 km cycle ride from the Cheshire Plains out into the edge of the Peak District and a 2 lap, 7.34 km run along lanes in the Broken Cross area.

Ian Lawton won the men’s race with a fast run securing him the title in a time of 1:14:18 ahead of runner up Arthur Connell (Evolution Bikes) who crossed the finish line in 1:15:19. Matthew Welsh of Deeside AAC took third place in 1:16:44.

The women's race was won by Rebecca Holland of City of Chester Tri Club in 1:22:08 with the 3rd overall fastest time on the bike. Charlotte Wormleighton came second in 1:28:56 with Natalie Abbott of Macclesfield Wheelers securing third place in 1:29:12.

Katy Burke achieved the fastest overall swim time whilst Phillip Lynes was the fastest on the bike and overall winner Ian Lawton put in the fastest run.

Race Director Simon Hill commented: “The Macclesfield Triathlon is a popular pool based sprint distance triathlon, and I am pleased that the 2013 race has been another success with athletes of all levels taking the plunge. I would like to thank all the marshals and volunteers as well as the Macclesfield Leisure Centre staff, Macclesfield Borough Council, Xtra Mile Events Crew, BTF Referees, Manchester Medical Services and Cheshire Constabulary for their help with staging this event.
