Søren BYSTRUP (DEN) and Julia VIELLEHNER (GER) win Powerman Austria 2013

Sunny weather and intense heat at Powerman Austria 2013 made the race an even harder challenge than the already tough course provides. Søren Bystrup (DEN) and Julia Viellehner (GER) would cope best with the conditions, and hold off the challenges of pre-race favourites and winners for the past two seasons, Joerie Vansteelant (BEL) and Susanne Svendsen (DEN).

Six times a winner, the opening stages of the race looked like that would soon become seven for LD Duathlon World Champion Joerie Vansteelant. However Danish athlete Søren Bystrup caught him in an exciting race just one kilometre before the finish line and won in 3:31:58, with a winning margin of 55 seconds. Vansteelant was in the lead right from the beginning, followed by Swiss Andrè Moser and Bystrup on the first two running laps. Bystrup did not feel very well on those first two running laps and even the first bike lap, but gained momentum during the ride and finally overtook Moser on the second bike lap. He came into the transition area approx. 90 sec. behind Vansteelant. Just one kilometre before the finish Bystrup saw Vansteelant in front of him and had the power to overtake the Belgian. It is the first victory in a Powerman race for Bystrup, who started also in Weyer 2012 where he was second (right behind Vansteelant). Moser took third with Powerman UK winner Matt Moorhouse in fourth and veteran Jochen Neyrinck (BEL) in fifth.

A Danish double victory was prevented by a Powerman newcomer. German Julia Viellehner, an excellent long distance runners and triathlete, would could win a Powerman race for the first time. She was followed by Susanne Svendsen from Denmark, who won here in Weyer 2011 and 2012. Viellehner intended to take advantage during the first running laps to takes a lead onto the bike section, and was in the end surprised by herself  because of her strong bike performance, where would further increase her lead. She won with a time of 4:03:50, more than seven minutes ahead of Svendsen. Austrian Simone Helfenschneider-Ofner took third, and with it the title of Austrian Duathlon Champion 2013.
