Richard Stannard reports on some very close a record breaking racing at the fifth Open Water Swim.co.uk Aquathlon Series Race of the season on Saturday.

Open Water Swim.co.uk Aquathlon Series Race 5 - 17th August 2013

FULL RESULTS | REPLAY IN TRIVEIWER

Almost perfect conditions welcomed the aquathletes to race 5 of the OWS Aquathlon Series 2013. With the water temperature just over 20°, fast swim times were expected, but we were not prepared for the stunning performance by Katie Henderson.

Fresh from victory the previous weekend at the English Senior Aquathlon Championships, Katie lead the 750m swim from the gun exiting the water and leaving transition in a superb 9:07. Hot on her heels was Glen Hall in 9:08 and third onto the run was Richard Stannard in 9:16.

Richard Stannard ran from third to first on the run and not too far behind was the fast improving 15-year old Michael Fabes; one to watch in the future. But the true action was in the women's race. Katie Henderson had a forty second lead over second female, Hannah Kitchen, at the start of the three-lap 5km run. Hannah narrowed the gap on each lap and with half a lap to go it looked like she might catch Katie who had beaten Hannah by eight seconds at the Nationals the previous week. Katie, however, had other ideas and responded to Hannah's attacking run, holding on to win by three seconds and breaking the course record in a time of 28:30.

The Open Water Swim Aquathlon Series women's course record has now been broken three times this season. Once by Hannah Kitchen, once by India Lee in race 4 (who also finished third in race 5), and now by Katie Henderson with Hannah also breaking India's previous record. Katie, Hannah and India will all be in action in the Aquathlon World Championship in Hyde Park on 11th September, however, they may all go head-to-head again in a dress rehearsal on the 7th September in the OWS Aquathlon final race Race 6.
