The second edition (under M-Dot colours) of Ironman Kalmar was held today in Sweden. In previewing the event on Thursday I was rather bullish on the race winning prospects of Great Britain's Jodie Swallow to take her first Ironman victory, after two second places already this year in Port Elizabeth (South Africa) and Frankfurt (Germany).

Fastest swim, fastest bike, fastest run and an 8:54:01 finish (to add to her 8:58:43 in Frankfurt) - a rather impressive "job done"! Her day started well - leading out of the swim overall - and finished with her crossing the line in 11th place overall, with almost 24 minutes margin over Sweden's ITU Powerman World Long Distance Duathlon Champion Eva Nyström. Of particular note, she finished off her race with a 3:06:41 marathon. If Swallow can continue her progress on that discipline - one she is more than capable of, as a senior international for Great Britain in road running in the past - this certainly will not be her last Ironman victory. More than that, she can in time surely be a podium contender in Kona too... she'll certainly lead that race given her swim and bike strength. It's also worth noting the differential with men's winner Pedro Gomes at a little over 34 minutes. That is impressive.

As with Swallow, Pedro Gomes (POR) also took his first Ironman victory in Kalmar. Out of the swim with Swallow's small group, a strong bike brought him to T2 in the lead around 90 seconds clear of Karl-Johan Danielsson (SWE). While Danielsson's efforts would result in a 3:33 marathon, Gomes proved his efforts weren't overdone and a 2:54:08 marathon was too much for Slovenia's David Plese to close.
