After previewing the event or us earlier in the week, Hans Geerts reports from Saturday's 2013 ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships from The Hague-Kijkduin, The Netherlands.

Lesley Paterson took Silver this time around after winning the title last year for Great Britain with Jacqui Slack fifth. For the British Elite men it was Asa Shaw 17th, Rory Downie 24th and Doug Hall 25th. Samuel Parker was a DNF in the Under-23 event. You can see the British Age Group medal winners HERE.

Conrad Stoltz and Helena Erbenova superior in 2013 ITU cross triathlon world champs

Conrad Stoltz did it again. After four XTERRA world titles and ITU World Championship titles in Extremadura and Shelby County, the South-African managed to grab his third consecutive ITU Cross Triathlon World Championship title, despite the completely different course specifics of the race on the beaches and in the dunes just soutwest of Den Haag. The Caveman re-established his status in the off-road triathlon discipline. In the women's race, Helena Erbenova took the title from Lesley Paterson. She could now claim a world championship on the very same course where she was crowned European Champion last year.

The relatively mild conditions of the North Sea caused no big differences in the swim today. Aussie Ben Allen would rather have seen a bit choppier surf, but he exited the water with only seconds to Dutch U23 athlete Marco Akershoek, closely followed by a large group of contenders, including Stoltz. Once on the mountain bike, the South-African easily rode to the front and never looked back. Ruben Ruzafa was just over one minute down after the second leg and gave it all he got on the run, but was not able to reel in Stoltz. Behind the Spaniard, Ben Allen changed into his running shoes in third position, but could not prevent a number of very fast men from running him down. Brice Daubord from France surged to third place.

Chantell Widney opened the women's race in the swim, but was already closely followed by Lesley Paterson and Jacqui Slack entering T1. Helena Erbenova lost over one minute on the swim, but displayed a remarkable strength on the mountain bike. She easily rode to the front of the race and could start the run almost two and a half minutes lead on Paterson. The Brit saw Erbenova and Renata Bucher pass her in the earlier stages of the bike, but managed to re-overtake Bucher and start the run with a small margin on the Swiss. In the closing 9k run, it was soon clear that her second place would not be threatened anymore. Erbenova on the other hand had a blistering run and finished with a five minute margin on the Scottish rocket.

In the U23 and junior races, the Dutch home team scored three gold medals: Cornelis Scheltinga and Jip Veelenturf (U23) and Jorik van Egdom (juniors). The Junior women's title also went to South Africa. Genevieve van Coller was too strong for the (all-Dutch) competition.
