Earlier in the week I wrote a preview piece on today's Toshiba Windsor Triathlon, which also hosted the British Elite Standard Distance Triathlon Championships, and on that basis, the events of this morning went pretty much to script. Here is the report from the women's race.

Pallant cruises to British Championships Victory

With the ladies off at 9 a.m. - and a very small field too, of what appeared to be just 11 athletes - the first key marker of the day was going to be how close was 'runner-turned-triathlete' Emma Pallant going to be to the front of the race after T1? First out of the water and well clear was Hannah Drewett who had around a 40 second margin over Emily McLoughlin. Pallant was through the swim/T1 in third place with a couple of athletes, including Kirsty Anderson, with her. Had there been a betting shop accepting money at that point, I'd have been 'all in' on a Pallant victory!

While a small group around Pallant did form on the bike, Drewett was proving to be tough and despite riding the whole 40km+ solo, she was back into T2 and still alone in the lead, a fine effort. Hannah is another athlete training in...Leeds! While she held the lead on the first of three climbs on the run up to turn at Windsor Castle, the writing was on the wall early as 20 or so seconds back were renowned runners India Lee and, after a slow transition and a 15 second 'stop-go' penalty in transition for a helmet violation ("I'm still learning!") was a smooth looking Pallant. Pallant passed Lee as the run took a right turn on the Datchet bound out-and-back section and the pre-race script was being played out as Drewett was clearly paying for her efforts a 100m or so up the road.

With first and second seeming a done deal between Pallant and Lee, the Bronze was up for grabs and for most of the 10km it looked as though it would be going to Emily McLoughlin. Heading into the finish straight though and Emma Holt had pulled up alongside McLoughlin and we looked set for a sprint finish. As it turned out, after two weeks of illness McLoughlin has little to give in terms of resistance and it was Emma Holt who would complete the Windsor podium as long time race leaders Hannah Drewett held on for fifth.

Having finished second last week at the Blenheim Palace Triathlon, Pallant also takes a commanding lead in the British Triathlon Super Series rankings.
