Securing a place in the Great Britain Age Group team for the PruHealth ITU World Championships in Hyde Park this September has been a key goal for more athletes than ever this season, with the Championships taking place on home soil. For the first time, separate qualification events were held for the Aquathlon World Champs, and the final event of three took place on Saturday at Hetton Lyons Park in County Durham.

RedVenom.co.uk / Tri It ITU World Aquathlon Qualifier 2013

The RedVenom.co.uk / Tri It ITU World Aquathlon Qualifier took place on Saturday 25 May, It was part of a day of sport which encompassed a Children's Triathlon in the morning, Cycle Road Racing early afternoon, then the main event at 3.30pm.

Hetton Lyons Park in County Durham was an excellent setting for the event with a shallow lake, purpose built cycle track and shale tracks for running.

The events team turned up at the venue at 6am to set up and it was apparent that the water temperature was below legal limits, luckily the sun came out to play and although not warm enough for the Children's racing in the morning, which ran as a Duathlon, the shallow water heats up quickly and by 3pm had reached 12°c.

The event was split into three waves with 30 minute intervals, Male under 40, Male over 40 and all females. With a two lap swim and four lap run the spectators had plenty of opportunity to see the athletes.

The first wave saw Ed Castro lead out of the two swim with the fastest split of the day, closely followed by RedVenom.co.uk sponsored athlete Douglas Roberts. Onto the run course and Roberts in his strongest discipline eased to the front to take overall victory with James Wilson also of RedVenom.co.uk moving through from sixth to second.

With many athletes in their respective age groups looking for qualification for London, there was some very competitive racing.

The women's wave saw some very fast and furious racing with the top three all in the top 10 overall and only split by 13 seconds, Johanna Gascoigne Owens of Alnwick tri taking victory from Claire Hann of Bikescience with Emma Holt of Tyne tri in third.
