Who needs a sprint finish in long distance triathlon racing? Increasingly it seems, 70.3 athletes do.

Today's Ironman 70.3 Ireland, Galway saw just that as Jan Van Berkel, a former member of the Abu Dhabi Triathlon Team - and he raced last weekend for The Netherlands in the ITU Mixed Relay Triathlon World Champs - edged out former Ironman 70.3 World Champion, Terenzo Bozzone, who was looking to add another win to his victory last weekend in Brazil.

The pairing spent practically the entire race locked together after exiting the swim in a touch under 25 minutes. Defending Champion Mike Aigroz was never really in contention, and although clear in third place, he was a full five minutes back at the finish, just dipping under the four hour mark.

We asked in our preview piece whether Eimear Mullan could make it a home win, to add to her Wimbleball and Bolton victories already this year. It was clear that Tine Deckers (BEL), a three-time Ironman France winner was the primary competition. We knew Mullan was suffering before the race with illness, but even without that it was going to be a very tough challenge against a quality and experienced athlete.

As expected, Natalie Barnard led out the ladies from the water, but from then on the top two headed towards the front of the race. Gaining three minutes on Mullan in the swim, and a further 12 minutes on the bike, there was only ever going to be one winner, the Ironman 70.3 Ireland trophy will be heading back to Belgium.
