Before highlighting the podium, just a little way down - but not far (14th overall, 3rd in Age Group) was Great Britain's Formula 1™ World Champion Jenson Button. To give some context, his cycle (2:24:42) was less then four minutes slower than female winner Caroline Steffen who, in the absence of Julie Dibens this season to date, is surely the finest female cyclist in long distance triathlon currently. Nice work Jenson! Jenson finished in 4:35:49. Ironically, he wasn't even the first Brit in the M30-34 Age Group, as the win went to Paul Ryman.

Two athletes at the head of the men's event were clearly in a different class to their chasers. Kona second placer Pete Jacobs had his usual fast swim to gain a buffer of just over a minute on Kiwi Cameron Brown - who then returned the favour on the bike to leave the pair in close order at T2. The 1:27:55 of Jacobs versus the 1:29:18 of Brown was the difference at the finish.

Ironman Melbourne, Ironman European Champs (Frankfurt), ITU World Long Distance Champion already this season - perhaps inspired by fellow Swiss Nicola Spirig - Caroline Steffen cruised to another victory in what is continuing to be a marquee season. Indeed, she finished sixth overall. Favourite for Kona, certainly.
