Poor weather and muddy conditions didn't deter almost 500 competitors racing in the sixth annual Upton Triathlon on Saturday. However, heavy overnight rain on Friday meant converting the triathlon to a duathlon (run-bike-run) as the rapidly rising River Severn was deemed unsafe to swim in.

Three-time Veteran Sprint Ladies champion from London, Alice Honnywill, who finished in 1:10:51, said “it's fantastic to be back at this unique triathlon on such a beautiful farm and the organisers deserve huge credit for battling against the elements in order to get so many competitors racing. The party element should not be underestimated, a delicious meal to recharge us and then a good warm down on the dance floor!”

The race attracted competitors of all standards from all over the country.

Novice competitor Tom Hoskyns said “As a relative newcomer to exercise I was fearing the worst, but the friendly, unintimidating atmosphere together with lots of support from cheerful spectators and marshals, made the whole event really memorable. I'll definitely be back next year when I hope to be able to profit from my swimming lessons!”

This year the Upton Triathlon raised £2,500 for local search and rescue organisation SARA (Severn Area Rescue Association). A particular thank you to all the volulnteer marshals and Thule, Embrace Sports, Fisher German, Pegoty Hedge, Maxifuel, Zone3, Trifocus and Upton Wines for their prizes.

If you want to take part in next year's triathlon on Saturday July 13th you will have to be quick off the mark when entries open on January 1st 2013.
