Defending champion Frederik Van Lierde and 2010 winner Tine Deckers made it a Belgian double today at Ironman France in Nice. Both were course record holders before today, and both still are. With new records set.

The biggest 'story' around the race of course was who wasn't racing - this was due to be the Ironman debut of Lance Armstrong - but the absence of the seven-time Tour de France winner should not detract from a superb performance from the 2011 Abu Dhabi Triathlon winner. Would things have changed had Lance been present? We'll never know. For now, Van Lierde is the King of Nice, Deckers the Queen.

Great Britain's Paul Amey backed up well from Ironman 70.3 UK last weekend to take a distant second to the dominant Van Lierde - his second Ironman®podium - using a swift 2:52 marathon to run his way through the field. With that great result in Arizona last year too, Amey will have his Kona slot all but secured. After missing a lot of training at the beginning of the season, Amey will be confident of performing very well in Hawaii.

Deckers secured her win through her strength on the bike. Giving up five minute to second placed Gina Crawford in the swim, Deckers returned the favour on the bike, reaching T2 with a five minute lead. A 3:02 marathon was an impressive run, and brought her the course record and a third Ironman France victory (2009/10/12).
