This was the eighth running of the Arundel Triathlon. The 800m/37km/9km course for the Standard and Relay race is tough at the best of times with two testing climbs on the bike from the historic town, but the mist and drizzle just added to the mix. The fastest swim was by Robert Brundish from Tri Camp Race Team in 12:07, who maintained his position despite a surging cycle from Peter Younghusband (Tri UK). Team Feat’s Paul Ashley was hanging in there for third, but no one could challenge Brundish on the run which included a savage climb up to a Jubilee Beacon as he clocked 34:02 to set a new course record of 1:43:59. Three weeks earlier Brundish took second at the Swashbuckler Triathlon.

The lead in the women’s race moved between three key triathletes; Tri247 columnist Sarah Lovelock was the fastest swimmer (12:44), but a storming ride byTri Purbeck’s Fran Bungay followed by a steady run was enough to hold off an fast finishing Anna Murowska from Hampton.

The Relay Triathlon was dominated by Team JAM from Steyning (Mark Tyler, Amanda Oxley and Jo Hesketh) who completed the Standard course in 2:00:30.

The 400m/19km/5.25km Sprint race saw Team Raw Energy’s Mark Davies set the fastest swim time with 5:37. That lead was eaten up on the bike leg by Christian Faires (Tuff Fity Tri Club) and club mate Dominic Chapman (30:11 and 30:47 respectively). The Tuff Fitty duo were expecting team mate Dave Risebrow to make a show, but a technical malfunction on his bike saw him crashing to the floor and he was lucky to escape serious injury. Faires was the stronger runner and held on to win the event ahead of Davies who was pleased to make the podium places after a number of narrow misses. Davies now focuses on his Ironman race for the summer. The runaway winner of the female race was Chichester Westgate Tri’s Dr Mary Campbell who led from start to finish and was an impressive 12th overall in 1:06:14. Second place went to Emma Hughes from Brighton Phoenix Tri and third to Mandy Border from East Grinstead.
