Did the most competitive domestic event of the season so far take place at St. Mary's Sports Centre in Wiltshire on Sunday?

The 2012 BUCS Sprint Triathlon Championships were held in Calne - and for those not in the know, 'BUCS' = British Universities & Colleges Sport, a.k.a. the student champs!

With the HQ of British Triathlon based at Loughborough University, and with several other triathlon focussed University teams around the UK (Bath, Durham, Stirling, Leeds and others), it's not surprising that the combination of facilities, time, structure and youth is one of the key reasons that the sport in the UK is so strong, in large part through the University system. Even Jonathan Brownlee is still finishing off his history disertation alongside trying to win the Olympics this summer.

The championships comprised of 750m (pool) swim, 25km cycle and 5km run, and featured many familiar and experienced names from the British Triathlon Super Series and other international races.

Fastest on the day was Rhys Davey (Leeds Metropolitan), however, Rhys along with five other finishers: Josh Cardwell, Russell White, Marc Austin, David Bishop and Rory Downie - who were the six fastest athletes by time across the line - were all given two miute drafting penaties, relegating them down the final rankings.

That meant that Luke Watson (Loughborough University), who was seveth across the line (who also won the BUCS Duathlon Championships in November), added the Sprint Triathlon Championship to his CV. The Standard Distance BUCS Champs takes place on 27th May in Nottingham. Luke will be looking for a hat-trick there, but will have an additional challenge - because the day prior he will be racing as a guide for Iain Dawson in the Tata Steel British Triathlon Champs, both events taking place at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham.

Luke and second placed Alex Matchett are actually from the same very small village in Wales which according to Luke "only has about 20 houses", and so there must be success in the water there.

For the ladies, Natalie Milne (University of Stirling) took the title with Elinor Thorogood (Loughborough University), recently interviewed on Tri247, second.

The 2012 World Student Games takes place this year in Taiwan on 29th/30th June, and so the top student athletes will noe be awaiting news on their selection - and whether the penalties in the men's race will impact the selections made.
